Provide assistance to tenants, especially among highly vulnerable households (seniors, families, newcomers, individuals with disabilities, etc);
The Table du Quartier Sud de l’Ouest-de-l’Île (TQSOI) is very proud to introduce the new organization : West-Island Tenants Action Committee (WITAC) or Comité d’action des locataires de l’Ouest-de-l’Île (CALODI). The constitution of an organization dedicated to protect tenants rights is an important, long-awaited step in the West-Island.
The mission of WITAC is to promote access to good quality housing and to improve the quality of life for West Island tenants.
The creation of WITAC is the result of several years of effort by a number of West Island social actors. For too long, the lack of resources has been a reality for West Island tenants.
The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the urgency of establishing a resource in the West Island. The timeline below illustrates TQSOI’s efforts to establish the new organization.
The TQSOI carried out a feasibility study to identify the possibility of tenants support organization establishment in the West Island.
TQSOI receives funding for a 3-year-project to create a West Island resource for tenants. The new organization would provide support to tenants facing challenges such as evictions and rent increases, while raising public awareness on housing issues.
One of the goals of the action plan to create the new organization was to start providing support services to tenants in 2022. Thus, in August 2022, a telephone hotline began operating.
The TQSOI formed a founding committee in the fall of 2022 with several other community organizations from the West Island. This committee has the mandate to support the development of the new organization.
The WITAC is officially incorporated as a non-profit organization. For the first time in its history, the West Island has an organization dedicated to tenant’s rights!
The Founding Assembly of the WITAC took place in Sarto-Desnoyers Community Center. The event drew nearly 30 people, and a Board of directors was formed.
