News of the West Island Tenants’ Action Committee
Housing insecurity and the lack of support for tenants have long been an issue in the West Island. After several years of efforts led by the Table de Quartier Sud de l’Ouest-de-l’Île, the West Island Tenant Action Committee (WITAC-CALODI) was formed on March 16, 2023. For the first time in its history, the West Island has an organization dedicated to tenant’s rights! Our mission is to improve access to affordable safe housing and the quality of life for tenants. While our foundation committee were working hard on establishing this much needed organization, we opened a telephone hotline, and have already provided support to over 200 tenants who reached out for help from different municipalities across the West Island.
Our membership registration is now open !
There are three types of membership :
- Tenant Member: Any tenant, 16 years of age or older, whose principal residence is located in one of the West Island municipalities.
- Community organization representative: Any non-profit organization offering activities or services in one of the West Island municipalities. The organization must identify a representative to act on its behalf.
- Supporting Member : Any individual, 16 years of age or older, whose principal residence is not located in one of the West Island municipalities.
The West Island Tenants’ Action Committee will finally be holding its Founding Assembly. West Island tenants and community organizers are invited! During this event, we will elect the board of directors, and adopt the bylaws of the organization. Appetizers will be offered to our members to celebrate our new organization.
Please note that only members of the organization can vote during the assembly. It will also be possible to register as a member during the event.
