Together for a more inclusive southern West Island

Together for a more inclusive southern West Island is a project that aims to improve the participation of people of immigrant origin and ethnocultural minorities in the collective life of our southern West Island community.

There are three main objectives:

  • Encourage people of immigrant origin and ethnocultural minorities to participate fully in community life, with a particular focus on decision-making bodies and democratic life.
  • Support the efforts of organizations (community, public and private) that wish to diversify public participation to their activities, including decision-making and democratic ones, through the creation favorable conditions and tools aimed at reducing obstacles to participation for people of immigrant origin and ethnocultural minorities.
  • Support the establishment of conditions conducive to the sustainable and rewarding integration of people of immigrant origin and ethnocultural minorities by relying on concerted efforts with community partners who work with these groups.

The project timeline is January 31st, 2022 – August 31st, 2024.

Project targets

  • Short term

    – Raising awareness and mobilization of target groups and community organizations.
    – Identifying the obstacles and solutions to public participation.
    – Increasing awareness of the opportunities for participation and developing a desire for the target groups to get involved.
    – Knowledge of the organizations’ democratic practices.

  • Medium term

    – Creating the tools and mechanisms necessary for the public participation of the target groups.
    – Empowering both the organizations and target groups through training, campaigns, recognition programs and networking.

  • Long term

    – A change in culture and habits both for the reflexes of organizations with regard to welcoming target people into their democratic practices and for the target groups to perceive civic participation as a way to counter their social isolation.
