Following community consultations held between fall 2023 and spring 2024 during the development of the new TQSOI Social Development Action Plan, and guided by the findings of the Southern West Island Population Portrait 2023, three key environmental priorities emerged as focal points for collective action. These priorities form the foundation of the TQSOI’s Environment Pathways, which aim to: protect and enhance access to green spaces; strengthen climate resilience and emergency preparedness; and mobilize stakeholders to improve waste management practices.
These pathways were selected in response to urgent local concerns raised during the consultations, including the loss of green space and biodiversity, the lack of inclusive infrastructure to support equitable access to nature, increased vulnerability to climate-related emergencies, and ongoing challenges related to waste – particularly food waste. Rooted in the lived experiences of residents, the Environment Pathways also reflect a broader commitment to addressing the impacts of climate change and advancing sustainable, community-driven solutions.
In alignment with the new Social Development Action Plan, the Environment Committee was established and held its first official meeting in January 2025. The TQSOI is committed to building connections with partners working on environmental issues and to creating opportunities for members to contribute to this vital work.
