A SNAPSHOT OF THE WEST ISLAND

When asked what hinders community groups from developing affordable housing in the West Island, many responded with “there’s a lack of knowledge of what is already out there.” This section of the toolbox aims to address that, by providing a list of groups who provide housing services to the West Island, a thorough list of all existing community housing in the West Island along with a map for visualization, case studies of successful examples in the West Island and a short list of projects currently in development.

COMMUNITY HOUSING IN DEVELOPMENT

West Island community housing projects that are currently planned for or are in development.

westview church — Westview church has partnered with Bâtir son quartier to develop a community housing project on their 80,000 acre parcel of land. This project is still in the early stages of conception.

Untitled design (4) — Partnered with the GRT, ROMEL and the OMHM, Ricochet has been working since 2017 to create housing in the northern West Island for individuals ages 18-35 experiencing homelessness. They have acquired funding from AccèsLogis for 32 units.

pcsm — PCSM has been working since 2020 to create long term housing for individuals with mental health issues. They have partnered with Bâtir son quartier. After facing many obstacles, this project is currently on pause.

st. maryès — Currently exploring the option of creating housing to serve the community in the southern West Island.

la sortie — Following their Horizon program, La Sortie is looking to build 15 units on the island of Montréal. They are partnered with Bâtir son quartier and Rayside Labossière. As of June 2022, La Sortie had ~89,000$ set aside and was waiting on news about further funding.

Untitled design (6) — Following the success of their first house in Île-perrot, LIBERT is looking to open a second transitional home for women in recovery from addiction, somewhere in the southern West Island, and has partnered with the CIUSSS to accomplish this goal.

lakeshore — Currently exploring the option of creating housing to serve the community in the southern West Island.

Untitled design (5) — Following the success of their first home for autonomous and semi-autonomous seniors, the NPO would like to open Villa Beaurepaire 2.0. They have partnered with the GRT, Groupe CDH and have their sights set on the southern West Island.

Untitled design (3) — Partnered with Groupe CDH, this NPO has been working on creating housing for single mothers in the northern West Island since 2018.

HOUSING SERVICES IN THE WEST ISLAND

Community groups local to the West Island of Montreal who provide housing related services.

The TQSOI housing dossier runs a housing committee to discuss current housing topics and facilitate collaboration between community stakeholders. Is working on phase 2 of PIC to break down systemic barriers for community housing and is establishing a Comité Logement to support tenants with their housing needs and tenant’s rights.

AJOI can help you in the search for housing. Depending on the case, this may involve assistance in visiting housing, consulting advertisements, negotiating with landlords or referring people to shelters.

PCSM runs the HOMERUN program that assists clients through the process of finding affordable housing. This includes how to plan, research, budget, conduct home tours, and learn about tenant rights.
