Traveling from the West Island to downtown Montreal or even from north to south in the same area almost always involves spending a long time in public transportation or being stuck in traffic. Transportation provides access to essential services such as food, health and social services, as well as sports and leisure activities. Poorly developed transportation network can be a serious obstacle for the population in accessing these services. Oftentimes, those who rely on public transit end up taking unreasonably long trips as a result of inefficient transit system. There is a clear lack of infrastructure that facilitates active transportation. Bicycle paths are often underdeveloped and not connected one to another.
The demand for public transportation as well as for train transit has grown constantly since 1998 (by 36% and 27%, respectively).∗ The congestion in the area increases steadily, while major boulevards and highways are frequently blocked.
During public consultations with the citizens, transportation has been identified by the community as a major problem and constitutes a complex issue. This is why a committee has been formed, and its role is to elaborate and implement an action plan for an integrated transportation network.
